Governance and the Rule of LawCosgrove

The Centre will work with Australian Government departments and agencies, and engage collaboratively with the United Nations and other relevant partners to assist countries in achieving good governance and strengthening the rule of law.

The Centre's work will focus on civil-military aspects that aim to achieve coherence in planning and implementation of governance and rule of law programs in the key areas of:

  • security sector/system reform (SSR);
  • transition from military to civilian authority (such as in the case of peace enforcement and stabilisation operations);
  • disarmament, demobilization, reintegration and rehabilitation (DDRR) of former combatants;
  • democratization and integration of armed forces;
  • police-military collaboration and coordination, and
  • mechanisms to enhance the protection of civilians.
